Writing a book is fucking hard, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Especially that first sentence, first paragraph, first page.

I started writing my sixth novel a few days ago, and this feels like the hardest one yet.

I’ve re-written the first page too many times to count. It’s been first person, third person, it’s been past tense and present tense.

Nothing felt right.

I‘ve never had that before. It’s disheartening and frustrating and I almost stopped writing and scrapped the whole thing.

This morning, I just thought:
‘fuck it’, just write the fucking story. So that’s what I’m going to do.

There’s the whole writing advice about not being able to edit empty pages, and writing shitty first drafts because it’s you telling yourself the story.

So, I’m going to write the shitty first draft, tell myself the story, and then make it pretty. I can even re-write the whole bloody thing in a different tense or perspective if I want. (That’s a problem for Future Sarah.)

I thought writing books would get easier with each book published. It doesn’t. If anything, it gets harder.

But, for some incomprehensible reason, I still love writing, so here we are… creating problems for Future Sarah and downing coffee like it is going out of style.
